Winders & half-landings · Waterfall or cap-and-band · Fixed price
Stairs are the hardest-working floor in the house and the most skilled carpet fit there is. We supply and fit stair carpet across Berkshire, Surrey, Middlesex and Greater London — straight flights, winder treads, half-landings and runners — in waterfall or cap-and-band style, with uplift of the old carpet, gripper and underlay all in one fixed written price.
A staircase concentrates the whole household's footfall onto thirteen nosings. We recommend dense twist pile — typically 40oz and up — or tight loop, over a firm bonded-foam underlay. Softer bedroom-grade carpet flattens on the nosings within a couple of years, so we'll tell you honestly when a sample you love isn't right for stairs. See our full carpet fitting service for the complete range.
Waterfall runs the carpet continuously over each nosing — clean and suited to most modern flights. Cap-and-band tailors the carpet around each nosing individually for the sharp profile that suits Victorian and Edwardian staircases. We fit both and recommend the right style for your stairs at the home visit, where the treads are checked for secure fixing first.
The wedge-shaped winder treads on a turning flight are where cheap fitting shows first — stretched carpet, gaping seams, lifted edges. Each winder is templated and cut individually on site, and half-landings are fitted as their own piece with the pile direction matched. It takes longer and it's included as standard.
Stair runners — carpet with painted or timber margins showing either side — are fitted with the same gripper-and-underlay construction as full-width carpet, measured so the runner sits perfectly centred, with stair rods available if wanted. A popular finish in period hallways across our service area.
Stairs take more concentrated wear than any other floor in the house, so we recommend a dense twist pile — typically 40oz or heavier — or a tight loop pile, over a firm bonded-foam underlay rather than soft PU foam. A carpet that feels luxurious in a bedroom can flatten and wear through on a nosing within a couple of years, which is why we discuss stairs separately at the home visit.
Waterfall fitting runs the carpet in one continuous flow over each nosing — faster, slightly more economical with carpet, and suited to most modern staircases. Cap-and-band tailors the carpet around each nosing individually for a sharper, more traditional profile, and suits period staircases. We fit both and recommend the right one for your stairs at the visit.
Yes — winder treads (the wedge-shaped steps on a turning flight) and half-landings are cut and fitted individually on site as standard. They are the part of a staircase where cheap fitting shows first, so each tread is templated and fitted rather than stretched around the turn.
A straight single flight of 13 steps typically takes two to three hours including uplift of the old carpet. A flight with winders and a half-landing takes longer because each winder tread is cut individually. Stairs are usually fitted the same day as the landing and bedrooms when part of a larger job.
Yes — runners with exposed painted or timber margins are fitted with the same gripper-and-underlay construction as full-width stair carpet, with the edges finished neatly and stair rods available if wanted. We measure the margin widths at the home visit so the runner sits perfectly centred.
We bring stair-suitable samples to your door, measure the flight and give you a fixed price. See our carpet fitting service, check how our pricing works, or get in touch.
